Movers move out

The William B. Meyer crew (our book movers), has left for home. The E-HF shift is complete, as is the shelving of the remaining Qs, PRs, T-Z, and Science Serials. Everything in our circulating collection is now shelvable again! Hurrah!

A couple of the monitors need to be replaced on B2, and the University Interior Designer is working on obtaining study carrels. There is very little to be done, so our renovations are almost complete!

New Printers, more PCs, Study Rooms, Whiteboards

Lots of new tools to help you have been installed! Here's the rundown on what's new:
One black and white printer, BMLB1PRT1, is located on B1 next to the stairwell railing, across from the study rooms.
A color printer, BMLSCIPRTC1, and a black and white printer, BMLSCIPRT1, are located across from the study rooms on B2, next to the stairwell.
An additional black and white printer, BMLSCIPRT2, is located in the back of the Science Information stacks.
Of course, there is still a black and white printer, BMLB26PRT1 in the BCC (the Boatwright Computer Classroom).
To make sure you're printing to the printer you want to print to, click File, and then Print, and choose your printer before printing! Remember that printing anything to a color printer costs 10 credits per page, while printing to a black and white printer costs only 1 credit per page.

Looking for PCs? You'll find PCs on B1 against the stairwell railing and to the left of the courtyard, on your left. On B2, the PCs are around the stairwell area, and there are study booths with PCs back towards the lakeside wall. You'll also find PCs as you enter the Science Information Center on your left, and all the way in the back of the Science Information Area stacks. Finally, there are PCs in the BCC.

The study rooms are ready on B1 and B2! All have PCs and larger monitors. You can check them out for 2 hours at a time.

Using the mobile whiteboards on B2? Come to the Main Service Desk for dry erase markers and eraser cloths. You can check them out for 2 hours at a time.

Finishing Touches

The open area of B1 is almost complete. We're waiting on printer installation and some touch-ups are underway, but the area is otherwise very usable.
The open area of B2 is getting close to being complete. Some painting and sheetrock is still underway. The furniture has been uncovered! Printers should be installed soon, as should the PCs in the Science Information Center.
The Study rooms are completely furnished, and the PCs and monitors are almost ready.
If you need whiteboard pens or whiteboard erasers, please check those out at the Main Service Desk.

Coming together

Workers are scattered across both basements working on a number of projects:

Painters are finishing up walls, columns, and study rooms on both floors and the open stairwell between the floors.
Wallboard work is being finished up on B2 under the the courtyard.
Ceiling work is being finished above the Science Information Center area stacks and in the B2 area under the courtyard.
Furniture has arrived for both basements. It has been set in place on B1 (some wiring is left to be done for some tables, but the furniture on this floor is usable!). The furniture on B2 is still under wraps as construction continues.
You'll see small squares still open in the ceiling througout the basements. A separate crew must come in to set the fire alarm system in place in those openings.
Study room furniture and doors will arrive soon! When complete, we'll check out keys from the Main Service Desk for those rooms just like we do for the 2nd floor study rooms.

Renovations in the Basements

Today, workers have been painting the stairwell railing, and have been working on the new group study rooms.

We expect some of the furniture destined for B1 to begin arriving on Tuesday, September 19.

None of the books are on the move today.

Where books are this week:
· Books with call numbers A-HF are in compact shelving on B1.

· Books with call numbers HG-S are in compact shelving on B2.

· Oversize books are on conventional shelving on B2.

· Books with call numbers T-Z are temporarily shelved on booktrucks; please ask as the desk for assistance with these books.

· Some books with call numbers PR, PS, and Q are on booktrucks next to the shelving they will soon be housed on. Please ask at the desk for assistance!

What's happening with the construction?
· Renovation work is ongoing on B2. Please be careful! This includes work on the ceilings, walls, and floors. Some shelving construction is also happening, and some of the PR, PS, and Q books that are on booktrucks will hopefully begin to be shelved this week, too.

· Some chairs have arrived, and are along the wall near the Oversize shelving. Other furniture may begin to arrive late this week or early next week.

· Need a quiet place to study? The Quiet Study Room on the 2nd floor will be the quietest area in the library while the renovations are underway.

Beginning of School Update

The movers and shelving installers have been very busy within the past week or so. Many of our books are now in their permanent homes:

Books with call numbers A-HF are on B1 in Compact Shelving.
Books with call numbers HG-PR599 are on B2 in Compact Shelving. Only a few books in the Hs are still moving down from Reference
The Ns have been shelved in the Oversize shelving on B2.
PR600s-PS are getting ready to move to B2 Compact Shelving.
Most of the Qs, Rs, and Ss have moved from Reference to B2 Compact Shelving.
Most of the Science Journals have moved to B2 Compact Shelving. (There are a few Science journals beginning with A that are still on B1 conventional shelving.)

The movers will be working on the following as school begins:

Science Reference will be moved from B1 conventional shelving to the shelving on the wall in the Science Information Center area.
PR600-PS will be moved from B1 conventional shelving to the compact shelving on B2. Some of these books may have to sit on booktrucks near their soon-to-be-permanent locations while we await the delivery of some shelving parts.
TR books will be moved to the Oversize shelving on B2, as will the other Oversize books in all classes. Some of the other Oversize books are located on the top shelves of Business Reference, in conventional shelving on B1, and behind the Circulation Desk. Please ask at the Main Service Desk for help.
TT-Z books will be moved from their old spots on B2 Conventional shelving soon, too. PZ books will go to the Oversize shelving. The others will be shelved on booktrucks for a while as we await shelving parts and pieces. Please ask at the Main Service Desk for help.
Reference and Government Documents books are going back on the shelves.

Right now, the only study rooms available for use are Group Study Room 1 and Group Study Room 2, located on the 2nd floor. Don't worry - there will be more study rooms when the renovations are complete!

Best Places to Study: We suggest the 2nd floor Quiet Study Room if you truly need a quiet place to study this week. Periodicals on the 2nd floor is also a good place to study, but sometimes the noises of books being moved in the Reference area just below might carry up into that area. Once the movers are finished in the Reference/Government Documents area, that will also be a good, quiet place to study. They should be finished in that area within a few days. Right now, the basements are not a place to study at all. Books are being moved, shelving is being installed, and construction of walls and ceiling is in progress.

Thank you for your patience as the renovations wrap up over the next couple of weeks. We're excited about the changes taking place in the basements, and believe that the wonderful spaces created will be worth waiting just a little bit longer for!

Books are on the move!

The movers are back, and are busy! The following are being moved starting today:

HGs are being moved from Reference to their permanent homes on B2 compact shelving. These are being shelved on the same set of shelves that the Ls and early Ps are shelved.
PNs and PQs are being moved from B1 conventional shelving to their permanent homeson B2 compact shelving. These are being shelved right where the movers left off with the PNs.
Ls are being backshifted some to free up growth space.
Science Journals beginning with "Developmental Biology" AND beginning with "Physical Review" (two crews are working on Science Journals) are being moved to their permanent homes in B2 compact shelving. These are at the far end of the Science area. Please ask at the Main Service Desk for help retrieving Science Journals, as the area surrounding their new home is under construction.

Installation on B2

All of the Ls, and Ps through mid PNs have been shelved on compact shelving on B2.

Construction of compact shelving is underway in the Science area. There are no books or bound journals in that area currently.

Ceiling grids and lighting are being installed on B2, so please be careful when you're down there! Also, workers occasionally have to turn off power to some of the lights when they're working on the ceiling and lights in certain areas. If it's dark in the area where you need to find a book, please come ask for help at the Main Service Desk.

Main Service Desk staff have the latest information on where books are, so please do stop and ask. We're happy to help!

Ps being moved, shelving being constructed

Late PA books are on booktrucks next to the old Oversize range on B2. They are being shelved on the adjacent compact shelving as it is finished.

Late PN books are being moved from the 1st basement's conventional shelving to their permanent homes on B2 compact shelving.

Shelving is being constructed on B2. Some of this construction is happening in the middle of shelving that is complete and has books on it, so please be aware as you search for books on B2 compact shelving.

Locations of Ls, Ns, and Ps

Ns have been moved to carts in Reference. You will see some Ns laying on top of carts - that's because they are too big to fit on the carts.

Ls are just starting to be moved to their permanent homes on compact shelving on B2. If you're looking for L or early LA call numbers, you'll find them on the compact shelving next to the old L-PN shelving area on B2, or on booktrucks on the move. Movers are working on moving the rest of LAs mpw, and will continue moving the rest of the Ls this week.

PB1 - PL2600 have been moved to the compact shelving that is across from the entrance to Science. The movers are moving the rest of the PLs, and early PNs, this week.

The old freestanding Science shelving has been taken to the recycling contractor, as has the old shelving that held the Ns. Work on the ceiling in the Science area is in progress. There are no books in that area right now.

N's Moved to Level 1

The movers will be done moving all of the N's to the first floor area (Reference/BIC/Gov. Docs) as of this afternoon (July 24) and will all be on trucks for the time being. There will be approximately 5 trucks placed against the first range in this area as there isn't enough space to continue the run of trucks. They are still in call number order, however. Please let us know if you have any questions. We will also continue to help patrons locate items in the N's.

Installation on B2, science materials move

It's a bit noisy and busy on B2: Capital Office Systems personnel are installing compact shelving on that floor. Please ask for assistance at the Main Service Desk if you need any books, but especially books housed on that floor.
The movers have moved books with call numbers Q, R, and S to the Reference area on the first floor.
Science journals and Science Reference books are on the move! Science Reference will be temporarily housed on B1 conventional shelving. Science journals will be temporarily housed on B1 conventional shelving and B2 compact shelving.
Ls and the beginning of the Ps will be moved this week to their permanent homes on B2 compact shelving. Ns will be placed on booktrucks, which will be stored in the Reference area on the first floor.
After the end of this week, the movers will not be back until the middle of August. Renovations and installations will continue on the basement levels.

Qs move; B2 level status

Right now, the movers are moving the circulating Qs (they're up to the beginning of the QAs now) from the Science area on B2 to the Reference area on the first floor (they're currently shelving Qs on Reference Range #1).

Additionally, workers are still working on the ceiling and the floor, and there are lots of boxes grouped around on B1.

In light of the increased activity on B2, we ask that you inquire at the Main Service Desk if you need items from that floor. Main Service Desk staff members are happy to assist you, and will retrieve any items you need.

Post Holiday Update

During the week of July 3rd, work on B2 mostly involved ductwork and the ceiling grid. No books moved during this timeperiod.

Now, that work is being completed, and the installation of the first set of compact shelving for B2 is underway. There are sheetrock walls and plastic to help protect both books and patrons, but please be careful when you go to B2, as there are workers on ladders and on the floor!

Science books will begin to move to their temporary homes in the Reference area this week.

Please ask at the Main Service Desk if you need assistance finding a book.

On B1, books are moving into their permanent homes:

A-E are on the compact shelving. All of the trucks rows that housed the Fs-Gs in Reference have now been moved to B1, and those books are being shelved.
New Hs Oversizes are still on the Business Reference Ranges 1-3 top shelves.
H - HB 75 has gone to B1 compact shelving.
The rest of the HBs, and HCs are being moved. HE 8846 - HFs are being moved to B1 compact shelving. Some are on the shelves, some are on carts.
HDs-HEs are still on the shelves in the Reference area, but will be moving soon.
HG-KZA will be staying in Reference/Gov Docs for a while longer yet.

On B2:

Demolition & recycling of more shelving units is underway.
More carpet has been ripped up and many ceiling tiles are gone.
Plastic has been taped up to protect the Ls - PN 771s and the PS 3560.U75 - Z ranges. Plastic has also been draped across the entrance to the Science area. You can get through the plastic to get to the books.
The old oversize section is intact and accessible.

Update on Permanent and Temporary Book Locations

Books with call numbers A - E are now in their permanent homes in compact shelving on B1. These ranges have even been labelled. Fs, Gs, and H - HFs are being moved into compact shelving.

In the Reference and Government Documents area, books with call numbers HG - K will be staying for a while longer, as will the Oversize books with call numbers F - K.

Books with call numbers PN 761 - PS 659 are now temporarily being housed on the old conventional shelving on B1, with more (up through PS 3563) being moved up and shelved there, too.

On B2, the shelves that used to hold PN761-PS3563 have been removed and recycled. There is plastic up to protect the books still there, and a sheetrock wall will be built to provide even further protection.

Please be careful on both basement levels! There are lots of people and booktrucks on the move, and there are some small bolts and screws hanging about from shelving demolition.

We encourage everyone to stop by the Main Service Desk to ask for help in locating materials.

New shelving capacity

When all new shelving has been installed later this summer, total capacity on Boatwright's B1 and B2 levels will increase from approximately 49,000 linear feet to approximately 57,000 linear feet, a 16% increase.

First phase complete, books on the move

This first phase of compact shelving installation is complete! A-C is on compact shelving in B1, and movers are moving the Ds to compact shelving on B1 now. PN 771 - PR 500s are on the old conventional shelves just vacated by the A-Cs on B1. PR 600s are being moved now from B2 to the old conventional shelves on B1.

Two crews of movers are working hard, so there are lots of full booktrucks on the move and the elevator is in heavy use. Please stop at the Main Service Desk in the library if you need a book from either basement floor.

What's Happening June 12-19?

Installation of the first phase of compact shelving is wrapping up.

Books with call numbers A-E begin moving into compact shelving on June 12.

Books with call numbers PN 771 – PS 3563 will be moving June 12-18. The elevator will be in heavy use by the movers during this time.

The best route to the B1 level is via the stairwell across from the Main Service Desk or the elevator.

The best route to the B2 level is via the stairwell to the right of the first floor copier or the elevator.

Installation of shelving is ongoing! Books will begin moving again on Tuesday afternoon. Originally we'd hoped this would happen on Monday, but there were slight delays in the shelf construction process.
One side effect of this delay is is that parts of shelving showed up before the installers were ready to install them. The installers put parts wherever they could, but ended up having to place shelving parts in the aisle on the far side of the courtyard. Those parts will be there until Monday morning, June 12. This limits access to circulating books with call numbers DS 740.5 (Range 57) through DT 731 (Range 59). If you are looking for a book in this area, please ask for help at the Main Service Desk. We can most likely reach the book from the other side of the shelves for you!

Shelving installation continues

The compact shelving installation is ongoing. Some of the carpet has arrived, and it will be installed on the compact shelving ramps. The carpet for the floor will be installed later, so the new carpet can be kept clean for as long as possible!
Right now the best way to get to B2 is via the elevator. The stairwells from B1 to B2 are both in the middle of the work zone.

Shelving installation on B1

Exciting news: the new compact shelving is being installed on B1! It is a little noisy, as the installers must drill down into the concrete floor to ensure the shelving is installed properly and securely. Installers may be arriving early, or staying into the evening on any given day workday.

You can go down on B1 to retrieve books with call numbers A-E if you wish (the elevator or the stairs across from the Main Service Desk are your best access points), or Main Service Desk staff will be happy to retrieve books for you.

B1 Renovation Update for 5/25/06

A wall has been constructed on B1, delineating what will be a safe passage from the elevator and the front stairwell to the books housed on that floor. Accessing books, Renovation update

Please ask at the Main Service Desk if you need books with call numbers A-K. Library staff will retrieve those books for you.
A-E books are still on B1, but demolition and construction is underway on that level.
B2 is open (including books with call numbers L-Z), but please do not go to the B1 level at this time.
F-K books are shelved in the Reference and Government Documents area.
The conventional shelving that used to hold books with call numbers F-K is now gone! Work on the floor and ceiling of B1 is in progress.
The Quiet Study room on the 2nd floor will be the quietest space in the library during the renovations of the basements.

B1 renovations

The old shelving that used to house books with call numbers F-K is now gone. It is being recycled. On B1, ceiling tiles, the ceiling grid, and the old carpet is being removed. Please ask for items with call numbers A-E at the Main Service Desk. If we can't get to a particular book right away due to construction, we'll retrieve it for you as soon as possible and contact you when it is ready for you.
Books with call numbers F-K are still in the Reference and Government Documents area - please also ask for these items at the Main Service Desk.

Status of the B1 level

Most of the lights are gone on B1, as is most of the old F-K shelving! Old carpet is also being pulled up. The rest of the old F-K shelving should be gone by this afternoon. Tomorrow the ripping down of the ceiling in that area will resume in earnest. If you are a patron who needs a book with a call number of A-E, please ask Main Service Desk staff to retrieve it for you.

University personnel working on the renovation will construct wallways/pathways on B1 within a day or so.

Meanwhile, B2 (which includes Science Information and books with call numbers L-Z and Oversize) remains open and fully functional.

Dismantling & Recycling Old Shelving

The old shelving which used to hold books with call numbers F-K is headed out the window, literally! A roll-off container is parked in the old post office loading area, where employees of Capital Office Systems are dismantling and tossing shelving parts right out of a window, right into the container. The shelving will be recycled by Sims.

F-K Books in Reference, Government Documents

Labels have been placed on all book trucks and shelves housing books with call number F-K (plus a few Es). Please note that most items with call numbers F-K are in the Reference and Government Documents area. Some F-K books may be in the sorting area behind the Main Service Desk. Please ask for assistance at the Main Service Desk if you need materials with these call numbers - we'll be happy to help!

The movers finished moving F-K book upstairs to the Reference/Government Documents area on Friday afternoon. There were 6 shelves of Es that were moved up this morning. The reason they are moving up too is that they were taking up 6 shelves of an otherwise now-empty range that needed to be moved.

Today I'm going to work on identifying where all of the F-K books are now living. I'll label the ranges and trucks on which they are living, and will post a map at the Main Service Desk when I am done. If you are looking for a book with a call number of F-K, or a book with a call number at the end o f the Es, please stop by the Main Service Desk for assistance.

Also today, the folks from Capital Office Systems are here and are taking down the old conventional shelving. The window in a study carrel on B1 has been removed, and the B1 door to the outside stairs is propped open. Capital employees will be using both of these entries to facilitate the removal of old shelving.

The movers are still moving F-K books upstairs, and are packing up serials and books from B1 storage. Serials and books to be discarded will be temporarily stored in boxes against the end wall of Periodicals. Serials and books we are keeping will be moved to the Reference area.

F & G books will live on booktrucks for the duration of this phase. The movers will place those trucks, 3 trucks deep, perpendicular to the Reference wall that faces the lake. They will make rows and aisles of trucks. And, they'll make sure that trucks are directly under the pendant lights so that people won't walk under them! The tables and chairs from that area will be moved around the corner and stacked against the wall.

Locating F-K books

All shelves housing books from the circulating collection in the Reference and Government Documents area will be labeled with temporary, brief labels indicating what is on those shelves. Labels are being put only on those shelves that are complete and set for this phase. Shelves that are still being filled do not have labels yet. Please click here for a spreadsheet detailing what is where as of now. A copy is also available at the Main Service Desk of Boatwright Library.
The move of books with call numbers beginning with F-K should be complete by Monday, May 15. Labeling will be updated on Thursday, May 11 and Monday, May 15.

May 9, 2006 Renovation Update

The movers (William B. Meyer) continued to remove items from Reference and Government Documents and boxed those items up. Those items are being housed around the Reference area and the Government Documents area. Items from level B-1 are being moved into this shelving space.
Oversized items (items that had been shelved with the other items in their class on the conventional shelving, but are too large for the compact shelving) are being shelved on the top shelves of the Business Reference shelving units. These items have colored flags sticking out the tops, so they are easy to spot. Hs are housed on the top shelves of the Business Reference area, then continue on the Reference shelving. Some Hs are still are shelving carts, and many Js are on shelving carts. Many Js will stay on shelving carts during this phase.
